Black & Decker BDCDMT120 Matrix Cordless Drill Review
The Matrix drill by Black & Decker carries on a long line of interchangeable tool systems built by the company.
I remember 10 years ago when they had a system out called “Firestorm”, with very much the same concept.
So, they know what they’re doing, and that’s very evident to reviewers and owners of this drill system.
If you’re new to tool systems, they’re a great way to get a lot of bang for your buck!
Using a drill base as the body, different tools such as saws, impact drivers, sanders, routers and more can be attached.
It’s like owning all of the different tools, but the tool system takes up much less space and is less expensive!
- Versatile tool system allows you to have many tools for a small cost
- Long battery life keeps you working all day
- Comfortable to grip and lightweight to hold
- Perfect for you if you’re homeowner or hobbyist
Reviewers of the Black & Decker BDCDMT120 Matrix drill really had a lot of good things to say about the drill, and were, for the most part, pleased. Like any inexpensive drill, this one clocks in around $60 at the time of writing and is designed and aimed at homeowners.
This means that the Matrix drill doesn’t have professional-level features such as high speed, a 1/2″ chuck or heavy duty durability.
On the positive side of life, this drill comes highly rated by a number of home users and even some professional users. One reviewer, a locksmith, stated that he keeps this drill system in his vehicle for quick homeowner drill-out jobs.
Other reviewers state that the drill as well as other attachments exceeded their expectations and work hard to make their projects get done!
Ease Of Use and Feel
One of the top positives that users pointed out was just how good and balanced the Matrix drill feels in your hands. Users noted both the weighting and the comfort grip to be excellent and exceeding their expectations.
Though the drill isn’t the most powerful you can set your hands on, reviewers felt that it was powerful enough for all of the home and hobby uses they had for it.
Special Features
One thing that this drill is really lacking is an LED worklight. As you may know, I am a big fan of these because they do make life much easier when drilling, but it is understandably impossible to put one on this drill system base. The other attachments would block it, making is distracting and possibly unusable.
Other than that, the drill does feature a small bit holder on the base, and the most notable special feature is that fact that the tool can be interchanged into many types of tools.
Target User
Black & Decker has specifically designed this tool for the casual homeowner. It excels by offering a variety of tools in a small space for a very affordable cost. In fact, some professional reviews even said that they keep a Matrix system bag around for simple repairs and quick jobs.
As we mentioned above, many reviewers noticed that you simply can’t use this drill system all day on one battery. And you obviously can’t work with the drill, while your spouse or friend works with the saw or router.
For that reason, this drill isn’t designed for heavy use, which discouraged some reviewers who thought it would be up to the task. Still, this drill is perfect for the casual user, and you can save a lot of money by buying it instead of the whole assortment of different tools!
